Private Teaching

I teach privately from our home in Brighton  (a minute from Brighton railway station).

I offer jazz improvisation lessons for all horn players (saxophone, clarinet, flute, trumpet, trombone etc.)  Beginners to jazz, including strictly ‘classical’ players, are always welcome.  You should have reached a reasonable standard on your instrument – at least a year or so of playing experience.  Some reading ability is useful but not essential and no grades are required.

One-to-one lesson charges:     hrs £40     2 hrs £60

2-3-4 Scheme

I also offer lessons for two, three, or four people together.  The 2-3-4 scheme  allows people to share the cost of a lesson by teaming up.  It can also be great fun practising with others.

If you are interested in this scheme you should find one or more other players who are ideally at a similar standard to you.  The sessions will be practical for the most part, playing along to suitable backing tracks or live accompaniment from myself at the piano, with feedback and advice as we go along.  Solos will be taken in turn with opportunities for backings, riffs and other interactive devices.  You should agree on some tunes or topic areas you would like to work on in your lesson together.  Here are some ideas:

  • All The Things You Are
  • The Chicken
  • Summertime
  • Blues
  • Rhythm Changes
  • II V I's
  • fast playing
  • ballads

These sessions last an hour and a half and to ensure a prompt start you are invited to arrive up to 15 minutes in advance to get set up and tune your instruments etc.

2-3-4 scheme charges:     hrs £48
2 people pay £24 each
3 people pay £16 each
4 people pay £12 each
