Bassey Plays Basie
Brighton Jazz Club, June 2006
Mark Bassey is well known as one of the finest trombone soloists on the busy UK scene, and is just as gifted as an arranger and bandleader. His talent is equaled by his irrepressible showmanship. He led his excellent quintet through many classic arrangements, many rewritten with a quirky spin.
The already timeless Basie repertoire proved to be ideal for a feelgood jazz crowd; Cute, Splanky, Flight Of the Foo Birds, Moten Swing, Jive At Five and many more were played with the the two horn front line cleverly arranged to mimic the original big band charts.
His band are well-chosen for their task, with Ron Parry, a deserved drumming legend who has served his time with many jazz greats (Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Sonny Stitt, Lockjaw Davis...) anchoring the ensemble; Dave Whitford, a real find, adding a beautifully rich tone on double bass; pianist/organist Terry Seabrook adding masses of experience across the genres; and tenor sax Simon Savage, linking perfectly with the trombone, and adding many powerful and intelligent solos. The predominantly Basie programme was varied enough to keep the audience riveted throughout.
